40 word-level starter activities: 30 worksheets with lesson plans and ten additional teacher-led plans, plus appendix materials, in a 91-page PDF for Year 7 English.

Three teaching sections cover spelling, spelling strategies and vocabulary. Activities explore vowel sounds, plurals, prefixes and suffixes, apostrophes, homophones, syllables, silent letters, alphabetical order, compound words, word classes, comparisons, conjunctions and words borrowed from other languages.

Plans provide outcomes, preparation, timing, grouping, teaching approaches and extensions where relevant. Ten starters can be delivered without pupil worksheets. Appendices provide a recording sheet and templates or materials for word-building and other activities.

Designed for approximately 10–15-minute lesson openings, with some pages supplying enough material for several sessions. Use with Year 7 students of varied abilities; dictionaries, paper or whiteboards are needed for selected tasks.

This is the original 2001 publication, organised around the historical National Literacy Strategy Framework. Objective and website references are retained without a claim of current curriculum alignment or included website access.
