EYFS NCETM Mastering Number supporting resources
Week 24: Composition of 10

Use this resource to support teaching as part of Week 24 of NCETM Mastering Number.
Thinking about numbers as “five and a bit” is a powerful way to help children understand how numbers to ten are made up. Ten-frames support this idea clearly and visually. The top row represents five, and any extra counters are shown on the bottom row as the “bit.”

For example, the number seven can be seen as five and two more. When children are able to recognise the group of five as well as the additional amount, they develop a deeper understanding of number composition. This helps them move beyond counting each object individually and strengthens their overall number sense.
