Reinforces that tens x ones = tens but tens x tens = hundreds etc so that students see that knowing their single digit times tables means that they can actually do a lot more (the size of the unit does not change the result of the multiplication eg 5 x 3 elephants = 15 elephants, 5 x 3 ribbons = 15 ribbons, 5 x 3 tens = 15 tens, 5 x 3 thousands = 15 thousands )
