This workbook allows students to explore Shirley Jackson’s 1948 short story ‘The Lottery’ through a number of different activities. Students can work through the workbook independently (there is space to write directly into the workbook) or teachers can pick and choose activities for the classroom.

This download includes:

  • Complete Student Workbook with a variety of tasks to build both comprehension and analytical skills. Extension activities and a glossary are also included.
  • Teacher notes with answers to all questions in the Student Workbook, as well as suggested teaching approaches and ideas for differentiation.

The activities in the Workbook equate to roughly 5 or 6 lessons. Whilst the material would suit a Year 9 group well, the activities could be used for KS4 or even lower down in KS3 (e.g. for a high ability Year 8 group).
