This lesson introduces children to core Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) principles in a simple, engaging, and age-appropriate way. Using the Thought Detective Worksheet, pupils learn how to recognise unhelpful thoughts, explore the feelings connected to them, and develop more balanced, helpful thoughts—key skills that support emotional regulation and resilience.
In the session, pupils take on the role of “Thought Detectives,” investigating a recent situation that led to a difficult emotion. Through guided prompts, they explore the clues (thoughts, feelings, and context), examine whether the original thought is fully accurate, and finally create a more balanced conclusion. This mirrors the CBT process of cognitive restructuring, where children learn to challenge unhelpful thinking patterns and replace them with supportive, realistic alternatives.
The lesson teaches children the fundamental CBT idea that our thoughts influence our feelings and behaviours, and that by understanding and reframing those thoughts, we can improve how we feel and how we respond to situations. The worksheet structure helps pupils build emotional literacy, self-awareness, and problem-solving skills, while also supporting common PSHE/Health & Wellbeing curriculum aims.
