From the 2026 series onwards, Paper 1 Question 5 of GCSE English Language (AQA) is changing in the way that the question will be presented to candidates.
The way that the picture stimulus is described will change to encourage students to think “outside” the picture, as it were. Also, the question option for a story will also change, emphasising that it does not have to be a complete short story, but rather an “opening”.
This pack of 10 example questions should be enough to both keep your classes bus and enable them to get used to the new wording. Although these changes could be seen as minor (and in the big scheme of things, they are), it is always better to thoroughly prepare students for any change in the way that questions are presented.
These are also very useful for “cover” lessons if you need something quick that can be quickly printed and used for the duration of a class. You could also use them as “mini-mocks” or simply as what they are - a great way to get the changes to Paper 1 Question 5 across to your learners.
I hope that the choice of pictures will stimulate your learners as much as they have my own.
