What’s it for?
This versatile resource is a 2D shape matching activity that can be used for individuals or groups. The cards can be prepared ahead of time by cutting them out and punching a hole in each one.
This resource helps learners name, count the sides of, and match 2D shapes to their correct word labels. The set includes four answer cards on page 4, which learners can use to check their work independently or as a reference while completing the activity.
How to use this resource
-
Matching: Learners match each 2D shape image with its corresponding name card. The cards can be laid out on a table or kept on a ring. As they match, encourage learners to name the shape and count its sides.
-
Ordering: Once the pairs are matched, learners can order them by the number of sides, from least to most or vice versa.
-
Hide and Seek: For a more engaging game, use the cards for “hide and seek.” Hide one half of the set (either all the pictures or all the name cards) and have learners find the missing pieces and match them up. Laminating the cards will make them more durable for use outdoors.
-
Reference: The matched sets can also be used as a reference for learners to check the number of sides or the spelling of a shape’s name.
Shapes Included
oval, ellipse, semi circle, circle, triangle, equilateral triangle, right-angled triangle, square, rectangle, trapezium, parallelogram, rhombus, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, nonagon, decagon
Suggestion
This resource works best with plastic keyrings that can be easily unclipped, these can be purchased online. Alternatively, you can use a string or thin ribbon. Attaching a small piece of velcro to both ends of the string would also allow learners to use the resource more independently.
