Layout of the lesson
•What is the difference between temperature and thermal energy
•What internal energy is and how it links to the change of state of substances
•The 3 different types of thermal energy transfers
•Student tasks where students can solidify their knowledge on the content covered so far to inform their introductions and explanation of results
•How to calibrate a thermometer and the importance behind calibrating thermometers to determine accuracy
•What a cooling curve looks like and explaining why it is a curve
•Students complete a risk assessment
•Loose method on how to conduct the investigation with instructions on what do when done and a guide on drawing graphs
•How to calculate excess temperature and rate of cooling by finding change in temperature/time.
•What is specific heat capacity, how can it be calculated and an example to provide context and build understanding on specific heat capacity
•How to draw a suitable table and calculate the ratio of the rate of cooling water to the rate of cooling of oil and specific heat capacity. This is followed up by support in understanding what specific heat capacity and the ratio tells us about the cooling of a substance.
•Evaluation guides with prompts to support students in writing and in-depth evaluation. It is wise to encourage students to think about their own experiences during the practical for where issues may have arisen and how these could be resolved in the future
