In ‘Manage that Class with Sue Cowley’, the behaviour guru coaches a Year 4 teacher on managing class noise levels by using clear instructions, time targets, and varying the teacher’s voice level.
Sue Cowley observes a 3D shapes lesson via hidden cameras taught by E’Van Tsang at Greenholm Primary in Birmingham. She is able to coach her about keeping noise levels down throughout the Year 4 lesson via a concealed earpiece.
Sue suggests using instructions rather than questions, setting time targets, getting children more actively involved and using non-verbal signs.

I love this! Very helpful exercise!
Thank you, Sue...that was inspiring! Im a secondary trained teacher, I guess it would need a different approach teaching older pupils :) but I have taken on board many positives...Angela
Really useful practical advice from Sue to the Year 4 classteacher - I liked the immediacy of using an earpiece to provide instant feedback and offer suggestions for direct intervention. Sue provided a half-day's INSET at my school on 'Managing Pupil Behaviour' a few years ago and it was excellent. I've been teaching for 16yrs but still at times need positive suggestions to keep my pupils on track & monitor noise levels in the classroom. Peter
