A Moment in Time | Walk in Their Skin | Grades 9–12

Inspired by Admiral William H. McRaven’s 2014 University of Texas commencement speech, this 33-page study encourages students to look beyond his ten life lessons and examine their own experiences, values, and futures.

Students explore five themes: Everyday Heroes, Moral Courage, Compassion, Hope, and The Size of a Heart.

Activities include:

Listening to McRaven’s speech using a QR code.

Five guided self-reflection activities.

Creating a personal time capsule with five meaningful items.

Writing letters to their younger and future selves.

Inviting an everyday hero to contribute a sealed message.

Writing and recording a personal introduction speech.

An optional graded analytical essay about McRaven’s speech.

Two authentic student writing examples.

Personal reflection activities are ungraded. Writing and speaking assignments may be assessed separately.

Ideal for high school English, PSHE, character education, life skills, and homeschooling.

Includes: 33-page printable PDF with student activities, teacher guidance, and historical references.

History provides the evidence. Empathy guides the questions.
