This resource is for KS3 students and weaker KS4 students. The focus is on adding and subtracting large direct numbers and also decimals, both of which cannot be done by counting along a number line. The resource consists of a presentation, which includes solutions to all questions.
The lesson starts by revising adding and subtracting small integer directed numbers.
Students are given a model. First step is to decide whether the answer is positive or negative. Step 2 is deciding whether to add or subtract the absolute values to find the absolute value of the answer. Step 3 is to combine steps 1 and 2.
Student understanding is tested using plenty mini white board work. The lesson finishes with an exercise.
