Add and subtract fractions with different denominators by seeing the common denominator on fraction bars. 16 questions, full answers included.

Worksheet (1 page): the first questions show both fractions as bars re-split into the same number of equal parts, so students can see why the common denominator works. The bars fade to writing the common denominator, then students work on their own, including sharing a cake and pouring from a jug. Every answer is given in its simplest form.

Further practice (1 page): graded by difficulty, with harder pairs of denominators, finding a missing fraction, comparing a sum with a single fraction, and contexts such as pocket money, the perimeter of a triangle and time spent on homework. It ends with answers greater than 1, written as mixed numbers, and deciding whether a sum is more or less than 1.

Answers to all 16 questions are included as a separate file.

Suitable for GCSE Foundation (AQA N8) and for Key Stage 3 classes working on fractions.
