Addition Game - Hit the Number is an Addition Game of Strategic Thinking and Facts to 20? This printable game download also has a link to an electronic version use to demonstrate the game on your IWB.

Aim:

- To practise strategic thinking and Addition skills to twenty using a game.

What you need:

3 students
1 game board
10 game counters
pencils and paper

Game Roles:

2 Players – to play the game :)
1 Recorder - Records the formal algorithm made when the players place their counters on the game board. They also keep track of the total to ensure not avoidable errors are made by the players.

How to Play:

1. Decide who begins the game as the players and who shall be the recorder.
2. Select a number between 11 and 20 as the target number.
3. Player 1 places a counter on a number on the board and states it,
4. Player 2 places a counter on the board, adds the numbers covered and says the total aloud.
NB Players can only place one counter on each egg.
5. Play continues in this fashion until one of the players reaches the target number.

Discussion with Students:

When is the best time to swap recorders?

To Consider:

‘We need to spend most of our time working on Maths skills. If we swap roles after every game will we be 'wasting' a lot of time? Is there a more efficient way? Could we swap after every five games? Is this more or less efficient? How could we prove it? Do we lose an element of ‘fun’ by swapping every five turns? What do you think is the best way to play this game?

Variations / Taking it Further:

- Subtraction - start at the target number and subtract the covered numbers until one player reaches zero.
- Choose a multiple of 10, write it down and place it beside the board e.g 30. This number then becomes the starting number. Students then choose a number between 31 and 50 to be the target.
- Players aim to force their opponent to place a counter on the target number.

Possible Implementation Strategies:

- I find giving the groups the rules to a game and the materials they need is a very powerful reading comprehension activity. So give the students the materials etc

- Give one group of students the materials and rules ask them to learn how to play the game and their role will be to teach the game to the class.

Teaching notes for Before the Game & After the Game.
