Student Revision Guide
This Revision Guide offers 7 clear sections: Overview; Form and Structure; Close Analysis; Key Themes; Context; Critical Perspectives; Study Questions and Extension Activities.

The Close Analysis section follows a carefully observed social meditation in which young mothers watch their children at play whilst contemplating how marriage and motherhood have altered their lives and identities. Form and Structure covers three eight-line stanzas in free verse and the progression across time from seasonal observation, through domestic routine, to a broader recognition of how time transforms all human experience. Context sets the poem in the late 1950s, when suburban development and changing social expectations created new patterns of domestic life. Critical Perspectives draws on Andrew Swarbrick’s account of Larkin finding profound significance in ordinary social observation.

Quotation Quilt
A selection of key quotations from ‘Afternoons’, arranged to support the themes and concepts an essay on this poem is most likely to need.
Quotations are grouped by seasonal decline and the fading of summer; the recreation ground and the playground as a space where past and present intersect; the domestic detail of albums and courting-places; the mothers caught between traditional expectation and emerging possibility; and the closing displacement from the centre of their own lives.
