This presentation was developed for Lower Key Stage 2 (Years 3–4) as part of Safer Internet Week, with a specific focus on introducing AI in an age-appropriate, safeguarding-led way. FULL TEACHER GUIDANCE/SCRIPT IN THE NOTES SECTION

It is inspired by materials from the UK Safer Internet Centre, but has been carefully adapted. While the original resources are well intentioned, they often rely on abstract concepts, assumed experiences (such as group chats or advanced AI use), and terminology that can be confusing for younger children. In practice, this can make it difficult for 7–9-year-olds to clearly understand what is being discussed or how it relates to their own lives.

This resource takes a different approach by:

Grounding AI in real, recognisable experiences (e.g. devices answering questions, playing music, or creating images)

Using concrete, child-clear language rather than abstract or technical terms

Focusing on behaviour and decision-making (“OK / Not OK / Not sure”) rather than hypothetical or unfamiliar scenarios

Explicitly addressing key safeguarding themes: kindness, honesty, personal information, and adult support

Avoiding anthropomorphised AI imagery or language, reinforcing that AI is a tool, not a person

The lesson is structured to build understanding step by step, starting with what AI is, then practising judgements through carefully sequenced scenarios, and ending with a strong, reassuring message about adult support.

Aimed at:

Lower KS2 (Years 3–4 / ages 7–9)

Teachers delivering Safer Internet Week or online safety lessons

Schools seeking a clearer, more developmentally appropriate introduction to AI

This resource is particularly suitable for classes where children may have uneven or limited exposure to AI, and where clarity, reassurance, and safeguarding are a priority.
