The aim of this lesson is to introduce students to the American West course and some of the key ideas which shaped the development of America during the nineteenth century, These include Manifest Destiny, survival, colonisation, migration and the idea of ‘civilising’ the West.
Students begin by exploring the Great Plains, including its challenging climate and extreme weather, before being introduced to the Plains Indians and their communities. This provides an important foundation for understanding the different peoples, environments and challenges that feature throughout the course.
The lesson uses an enquiry-based lightbulb activity, with students adding their ideas around a key question. This becomes a central feature of the unit, allowing students to return to it throughout the course and map how their understanding develops from lesson to lesson.
Questions are used throughout to challenge assumptions and encourage students to think more deeply about the development of the American West, culminating in a lively balloon debate where students consider who could help move America towards becoming a ‘great nation’.
A road map activity at the end of the lesson tests students’ new knowledge of the American West and provides an ideal opportunity for homework or further consolidation.
