Animal Babies – KS1 Science Lesson + 2 Printable Resources
A ready-to-teach KS1 Science lesson exploring animal babies, offspring, growth, life cycles and how parents care for their young.
Pupils begin with a visual matching challenge, pairing familiar baby animals with their grown-ups and considering why some offspring look like smaller versions of their parents while others look very different. They then explore mammals, birds, frogs and other egg-laying animals, learning how young animals grow and change.
The lesson develops key scientific vocabulary and understanding through photographs, visual comparisons, Talk Partner questions, matching and sequencing activities and opportunities to explain reasoning. Pupils investigate the bird and frog life cycles and explore how animal parents feed, keep warm, protect and teach their young.
The 20-slide pupil-facing PowerPoint is the main teaching resource and includes an early retrieval/prediction activity, carefully sequenced explanations, differentiated independent tasks, a True or False check for understanding and pupil self-assessment. It supports KS1 Science: Animals, including humans, alongside Working Scientifically, spoken language and opportunities for comparison, sorting, matching and reasoning.
Two printable A4 resources are also included:
Animal Babies At A Glance – a black-and-white, colour-in visual summary for consolidation, revision or classroom reference.
Animal Babies Activity Sheet – an application activity featuring baby-to-parent matching, frog life-cycle sequencing, parental-care matching and a drawing/writing challenge.
Together, the printables provide two different functions: one helps pupils review and remember the learning, while the other allows them to apply and demonstrate it.
The lesson structure is also compatible with Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction, with learning presented in small steps and supported through modelling, guided practice, questioning, scaffolding and regular checks for understanding.
Ideal for: KS1 Science • Animals Including Humans • Animal Offspring • Baby Animals • Life Cycles • Growth • Working Scientifically
