  1. AQA Synoptic Essay (Paper 3) for use with year 12 -a n introduction to the synoptic essay on paper 3 of the AQA Biology A-level. I deliver this as 2 lessons.
    Lesson 1 includes the following…
  • choose topics relevant to the essay title
  • understand the mark scheme and why essays are awarded each band of marks.
  • Explore ways in which we can link topics to the main theme of the question ie the importance of (this is what students find hardest to do and what they need to be able to do gain the top 2 bands of marks)
    Lesson 2 Includes the following…
  • discussion of marked examples from AQA website
  • Students use markscheme to mark essay examples - unmarked and marked essays included.
    NOTE - I designed this ppt to introduce essays to my year 12s at the end of the AS course.
  1. AQA Synoptic Essay (paper 3) for use with year 13 - 2 Lessons on how to structure a synoptic essay, how the mark scheme is awarded and how to include ‘importance’ in the essay.
    Lessons include -
  • ppt breaking down the marksheme with examples of importance to A-level standard.
  • 2 essays for students to mark - to show they understand the markscheme (blank and marked versions)
  • detailed essay plans for 2 essay titles
  • Blank essay planning grid.
  • 20 essay titles to plan - I normally get students planning these in pairs and then scan in a booklet of 20 essay plans they can take away.
  1. AQA 25 mark essay importance cheat sheet - A cheat sheet to help with planning of the 25 mark essay.
    The title is always ‘The importance of…’
    This sheet gives ideas of how students can link importance to common topics that regularly come up in the essay. The idea is that they can learn one importance for each topic.
