A complete lesson covering section 4.3.1.8: Antibiotics from the AQA Combined Science Trilogy specification, also appropriate for GCSE Biology classes.

The lesson opens with a recall starter, revisiting key ideas from earlier Infection & Response lessons, particularly the concept of disease transmission. This is followed by a short recall activity focusing on how diseases spread, reinforcing prior knowledge before introducing new content.

Students then explore an illustrated story of the discovery of antibiotics, charting Fleming’s work with penicillin and the impact this had on modern medicine. They consolidate this narrative through a set of summary questions designed to check comprehension and highlight the significance of antibiotics.

A quick‑check activity follows, allowing students to confirm their understanding of key terms such as “antibiotic”, “bacterial infection”, and “resistance”.

Students then complete a data‑based activity analysing the effectiveness of different antibiotics using real or simulated experimental data. This develops interpretation skills and encourages students to apply scientific reasoning to evidence.

To reinforce learning, the lesson includes two short final activities designed to check understanding of antibiotic action, limitations, and resistance.

The lesson concludes with a plenary, where students return to the original Learning Question and demonstrate how their knowledge has progressed.

All answers are provided for ease of marking and self‑assessment.
