A guided AQA GCSE An Inspector Calls lesson for Years 10–11 on the Inspector as a dramatic catalyst, with stagecraft analysis and answers. A full 18 slide presentation/powerpoint for teacher and including notes.

Help students explain what the Inspector does as a dramatic character, rather than simply listing what he says. This focused GCSE English Literature lesson explores how Priestley uses entrance, lighting, interruption, controlled questioning and the final telephone call to disturb the Birling household and reshape the play.

Students begin with an original, text-free Edwardian doorway stimulus and test its ideas against the opening stage directions. A clear catalyst explanation leads into evidence cards on stagecraft, a sequencing investigation of the Inspector’s questioning method, and a balanced debate about whether he is primarily Priestley’s mouthpiece or an independent dramatic character. The final sequence supports a whole-text thesis, two analytical paragraphs and purposeful redrafting.
The eight-page editable Student Workbook is designed for a 75-minute mixed-attainment lesson after a first reading of the play. Detailed Teacher Notes include a 60-minute route, suggested wording, misconceptions, safeguarding-aware delivery, support and extension. The Answer Sheet mirrors all 24 numbered prompts with alternatives, model explanations and a complete two-paragraph response.

The pack supports AQA GCSE English Literature 8702 modern-text skills, including informed response, textual references, analysis of language form and structure, contextual understanding and accurate writing. Short quotation fragments are used; schools should provide legal class copies for surrounding reading and check punctuation against their edition. The original visual is a movable and replaceable Word picture object, while all prompts and response spaces remain native editable Word content. Independently produced and not endorsed by AQA.
