AQA GCSE Power and Conflict Poetry SOW 18 revision lessons covering all the poems and comparison

These lessons are ideal for revising the GCSE English Literature AQA Power and Conflict poems with the students in Y11 but can also be adapted for first time teaching.

There is one lesson on each of the 15 poems in the AQA Power & Conflict cluster, as well as three integrated comparison lessons. The lessons are sequenced in order, to develop links between the poems, as the students progress through the SOW. Each lesson has clear learning outcomes and key words, then establishes the writer’s ideas and reasons for writing the poem before asking students to analyse three key writer’s methods linked to these (with writer’s methods being something students find most challenging and is often the lowest awarded AO in the examination). The analysis is scaffolded around probing questions, as a way to also promote unseen skills. Each lesson then has a whole class AFL opportunity called ‘consensus’, allowing students to compare and discuss their ideas.

Model answers and planning/writing frames are also provided in the three comparison lessons.

Copies of the poems are not included for copyright reasons. I suggest students use their AQA anthologies alongside these lessons.
