1-Hour Lesson – Fully Interactive – Ready to Teach

Dear Colleague,

Step back into the crowded streets of Whitechapel between 1888 and 1891! In this lesson, students will explore why people arrived in Whitechapel, examining push and pull factors, and evaluate contemporary views on immigration. They will analyse sources, categorise information, and develop their ability to answer a GCSE-style question.

This lesson is the second part of a 5-lesson Whitechapel unit. All lessons in this series follow a consistent model, helping students learn coherently and track their progress.

Learning Objectives:
LO1: Categorise the reasons for immigrants arriving in Whitechapel into push and pull factors
LO2: Analyse the push and pull factors as causes and consequences
LO3: Evaluate the usefulness of sources on views towards immigration

Lesson Features:
Knowledge-building activities on immigration and Whitechapel’s social context
Source analysis tasks leading to structured written answers
Fully assessed activities, differentiated by difficulty
Extension task to ignite debate and deepen understanding
Homework, reading resources, and task templates are included. The lesson is fully prepared as a slideshow.

This lesson is ideal for Year 8 or GCSE students and fits perfectly into a Whitechapel or Crime and Punishment unit.
