This sample unit provides you with an insight to the Art and Design Curriculum offered by Ascend Learning and shows what you can expect when downloading a purchasable unit. This watermarked sample shows Unit 1.1: Drawing - Marking the Canvas (a Year 1 unit of work).

The sample unit contains a watermarked PDF version of everything provided in a unit of the Art and Design Curriculum by Ascend Learning. Each purchasable unit is composed of:

  • The Ascend Learning Statement of Intent for Art and Design;
  • The Ascend Learning Art and Design Curriculum Roadmap;
  • A Unit Summary statement, which gives a brief overview of the learning that takes place within the unit;
  • A Unit Context statement, which details the prior learning that will have taken place to support learning in this unit and how this unit prepares children for future learning in other units;
  • An overview of which National Curriculum Objectives the unit covers.
  • A list of vocabulary which will be explicitly taught, along with a glossary of age appropriate definitions;
  • An explicit learning sequence, comprised of 7 lessons which follow this structure: Learning New Vocabulary, Artistic Inspiration, Acquiring New Skills, Developing Skills (2 lessons), Application of Skills (to assess disciplinary knowledge) and an assessment of substantive knowledge.
  • A Knowledge Organiser to summarise the key learning for children to use and refer to;
  • An editable PowerPoint Presentation for each lesson, which guides the lesson input and teaching of content;
  • An editable activity or worksheet to cover the objectives for each lesson;
  • A short, editable end of unit assessment to assess the substantive knowledge children have retained.

  • The Art and Design Curriculum by Ascend Learning has been developed by currently practising teachers, who specialise in curriculum design and have a thorough understanding of the demands of the Primary National Curriculum and the most recent OFSTED inspection framework.
  • The Learning Sequence written by Ascend Learning contains symbols to show how the learning in a specific lesson links to other areas of the primary curriculum with symbols to represent other subjects and where SMSC is integrated into the curriculum.
  • The Art and Design curriculum offered by Ascend Learning teaches children about a range of artists from the traditional, modern and contemporary eras. Children will learn about male and female artists from the past and present day, including artists from a range of places, cultures and backgrounds.
