Free complete lesson for AQA 4.1.1.1. Includes an 11-page printable workbook with answers and a browser-based simulation to visualize atomic structure.

FREE DOWNLOAD: AQA GCSE Chemistry - Atomic Structure (4.1.1.1)

This is a complete lesson pack for the first topic of AQA Chemistry. It includes a student workbook to work through in class (or as homework) and a simulation tool to help visualise the concepts.

What is in the Student Workbook (11 Pages):

Page 1: Learning goals and keyword checklist.

Page 2: “Inside the Atom” diagram to label and a table for particle mass/charge.

Page 3: Guide on reading the Periodic Table (Mass vs Atomic Number) and “Identity Card” practice grids.

Page 4-5: Electron Shells. Explains the “2, 8, 8” rule with practice templates for drawing atoms like Sodium and Chlorine.

Page 6: Introduction to Ions. Explains how losing/gaining electrons affects charge (Cations/Anions).

Page 7: Isotopes. Compares Carbon-12 vs Carbon-14 and includes a neutron calculation table.

Page 8: Exam Practice. Short answer questions (8 marks) testing the basics.

Page 9: Extended Response. A structured 6-mark question: “Describe the structure of an atom”.

Page 10-11: Quick-fire revision questions, true/false quiz, and extra electron configuration practice.

What is the “Simulation OS”? I created a simple HTML tool to go with the booklet. It runs in any web browser (no installation needed) and includes both offline and online files.

Build Atoms: Students add protons, neutrons, and electrons to see what element they create.

Immediate Feedback: It calculates the Mass Number and Net Charge automatically.

Visualise Rules: It shows if the atom is an Ion or an Isotope, and visualises electrons filling the shells.

Files Included:

Student Workbook (PDF) - Ready to print.

Teacher Answers (PDF) - Completed version for marking.

Simulation_Offline.html - Runs without internet.

Simulation_Online.html - Contains a link to the web version.

This resource is free to use. I am uploading the rest of the Topic 1 modules as a bundle separately if you find this one useful.
