In this activity the numbers have been exchanged for symbols. A key is given at the bottom of the page to show which symbols represent each number. The children have to work out the answers by subtracting the number associated by the symbols. An extension would be for the children to make their own symbol key and sums.

What a brilliant idea!! The kids get so bored with subtracting basic numbers, mine were really interested in working out the problems because of the colourful illustrations. Thank you!
