Contraception lesson for AQA GCSE Biology 4.5.3.5: hormonal and non-hormonal methods, how they work, evaluation with NHS data, worksheets and answers.

This is a complete lesson on contraception for AQA GCSE Biology (8461), covering specification point 4.5.3.5. It is Lesson 14 of 19 in Topic 5: Homeostasis and response and is designed to last 60 minutes.

Students learn how every method on the specification works: oral contraceptives that inhibit FSH, slow-release progesterone in the injection, implant and skin patch, barrier methods, intrauterine devices, spermicidal agents, abstaining when an egg may be in the oviduct, and surgical sterilisation. They then evaluate the methods using real NHS data on perfect and typical use, and explain why issues around contraception cannot be answered by science alone.

The previous lesson covers hormones in human reproduction, and the next lesson covers hormones to treat infertility (HT).

Includes:

  • PowerPoint lesson (32 slides) with full teacher notes on every slide: timings, answers, a levelled mark scheme for the 6-mark evaluation, misconceptions, questioning prompts and detailed guidance on teaching this RSE-linked topic sensitively.
  • Editable Word worksheets: a methods summary table, a where-does-each-method-work diagram and evaluation questions with data, each with a support version.
  • Word lesson plan with objectives, lesson sequence, differentiation, answers, common misconceptions and sensitivity guidance.

Every activity offers support and stretch that all students can choose, so no one is singled out. Support includes a part-completed table with sentence starters, first-letter hints, a planning table for the evaluation and a hint on every question. Stretch tasks ask why early pills were changed, how a vasectomy prevents pregnancy, and what scientists must test before a new method is used.

The slides follow the British Dyslexia Association Style Guide: a clear sans serif font at a large size, a soft cream background, bold (not italics) for emphasis, left-aligned text and plain English. Every diagram has alt text.

The science is presented factually, with no moral judgement and no assumptions about students’ relationships, beliefs or identities. The teacher notes cover ground rules, an anonymous question box, respect for religious and cultural views, safeguarding and signposting to confidential support.

How you could use it:

  • Teach it straight after a lesson on hormones in human reproduction.
  • Use the evaluation worksheet as homework or as practice for 6-mark questions.
  • Use it alongside your school’s RSE programme, with the science taught in biology.
  • Use it as a ready-made cover lesson: the teacher notes explain every step.
