This resource is suitable for KS4 students who have been shown how to balance equations but do not feel comfortable with it. I have used it several times where I pose the exam style question. I give them a few minutes to answer it. Then I go through the answer and why it is so. I then split the class into 2 sections, the half that were correct get the harder equations. They get to use each other as support and as little of my support as possible. I then focus my time supporting the other half of the class, going through simple equations and building it up. Towards then end of the lesson, one half have progressed through more challenging balancing and the other half have reached where the others started (as their equations progress to where the first group started). The support groups tend to benefit from drawing particle diagrams of molecules as it helps to visualise and count atoms.
