A complete 10-lesson Reading Skills scheme designed to build pupils’ confidence with the essential skills needed to understand, interpret and analyse texts.

The scheme begins with straightforward retrieval and vocabulary work before gradually developing pupils’ ability to select evidence, make inferences, explain ideas, analyse language, explore structure and compare texts. The final lesson brings these skills together in an independent reading challenge.

The lessons are deliberately clear, highly scaffolded and accessible, making the resource particularly suitable for KS3 English, reading intervention, catch-up groups and lower-attaining GCSE pupils. Each skill is taught explicitly using simple, memorable routines before pupils move from worked examples to guided and independent practice.

The 10 lessons cover:
Finding Information – retrieving clear facts and details
Understanding Words – using context to work out unfamiliar vocabulary
Choosing Evidence – selecting relevant quotations and details
Making Inferences – using clues to understand ideas and feelings
Explaining Evidence – developing responses using Point → Evidence → Explain
Language Choices – identifying important words and phrases
Explaining Language – exploring suggestions, effects and reader response
Structure and Organisation – tracking changes in focus, setting, time and mood
Comparing Texts – identifying similarities and differences
Reading Skills Challenge – applying the full range of skills independently

Included in the resource

140-slide PowerPoint scheme

The PowerPoint contains the complete teaching sequence, including:

  • Do Now activities
  • clear explanations of each reading skill
  • step-by-step reading strategies
  • worked examples
  • short practice activities
  • longer reading texts
  • guided questions
  • model answers
  • independent challenges
  • exit tickets and self-assessment

The repeated routines are designed to help less-confident readers become increasingly independent. For example, retrieval is taught through Question → Key Words → Scan → Find → Answer, while language analysis develops towards Word → Suggestion → Effect → Reader.

Teacher Scheme of Learning

A separate teacher overview provides the complete 10-lesson sequence, learning aims, expected outcomes, teaching notes and guidance on modelling, scaffolding and assessment. The scheme is designed so support can be gradually removed as pupils become more secure.
