The Bayeux Tapestry – KS2 SEN History Lesson | The Normans & 1066

A fully resourced 20-slide KS2 SEN History lesson exploring the Bayeux Tapestry and the story of 1066. Designed for Years 3–6 pupils working below age-related expectations, the lesson breaks learning into manageable steps with strong visual support, reduced cognitive load and accessible ways for every pupil to respond.

Pupils discover what the Bayeux Tapestry is, explore what can be seen in its pictures and learn the core vocabulary tapestry, sewn and evidence. They trace the journey from France to England, sequence the key events of 1066 and consider how the tapestry can be used as evidence about the past.

The lesson develops chronology, historical enquiry and evidence skills, while introducing the important idea that the tapestry tells the winners’ side of the story. SEN support is embedded throughout, including visual timetables, Now/Next prompts, sentence stems, closed-choice questioning, modelling, word mats and alternatives to written responses.

Also included is an A4 black-and-white Bayeux At A Glance printable for pupils to colour, revisit and use for retrieval and revision, alongside printable pupil support resources.
