A very important scheme of work on Boys Don’t Cry which introduces students to key concepts surrounding masculinity, including an exploration of the much discussed ‘manosphere’ with an introductory Language style lesson on Masculinity. Students are then guided through a structured introduction to the text and Malorie Blackman’s intentions, with a clear focus on developing analytical reading and writing skills from the outset.

The lesson structure: The lessons place a strong emphasis on vocabulary development through the use of Frayer models, alongside carefully scaffolded contextual knowledge to deepen understanding. All tasks are explicitly modelled to support students of varying abilities, making the resource accessible while still promoting high-level thinking. This unit is ideal for building confidence in analysis, encouraging critical discussion, and supporting students in producing thoughtful, well-informed responses.
