This booklet contains 10 imaginative breathing techniques designed especially for Key Stage 1 pupils to support emotional regulation, focus, and wellbeing. Each technique is introduced with a simple explanation, three descriptive words, easy-to-follow numbered instructions, and a clear description of how it helps.
Techniques include: Feather, Twist, Shape, Bubble Wand, Bubble Straw, Flower, Rainbow, Dragon, Warrior, and Windmill breathing. The activities are playful, sensory-based, and ideal for calming busy bodies, refocusing attention, or building routine breathing breaks into the school day.
Optional props such as feathers, windmills, paper flowers, bubble wands, or cups and straws can be used to enhance engagement—but all techniques work just as well with imagination alone.
These strategies support RSE objectives and the 5 Ways to Wellbeing by encouraging self-awareness, emotional expression, and stress management in a child-friendly, accessible format.
