A complete UKS2 lesson for Y5/Y6 on budgeting from Tykeoons’ MoneySmarts. Active learning throughout, differentiated for all abilities.
Pupils are introduced to the key vocabulary of budgeting (income, expenditure and balance) through a lesson that moves from concept to real-world application. After practising quick budget calculations on whiteboards, pupils work in pairs on a party planning challenge: deciding how to get the most out of a fixed £300 budget for a birthday party. Independent tasks then build on the vocabulary and skills covered, with progressively complex budgeting and saving challenges involving monthly planning and goal-setting. Works as a standalone lesson or as part of the full MoneySmarts 9-11 series.
Suitable for PSHE and financial education, with a strong cross-curricular link to maths through addition, subtraction and multi-step problem solving.
