This butterfly matching activity supports visual discrimination by asking children to match tiny butterfly images to full-sized photographs using a magnifying glass.
It includes images of twenty butterflies to explore.
This resource encourages close observation and attention to detail. Children study images of butterflies and then use matching cards that show a much smaller version of each butterfly. A magnifying glass is needed to identify the matching cards which creates an engaging and highly focused learning experience. NOTE: The small images of the butterflies measure less than half a cm.
The activity promotes careful looking, perseverance, and descriptive language skills as learners talk about similarities and differences in wing patterns. It links well to science topics, outdoor learning, mini beasts, and nature study.
This activity is suitable for Early Years, Key Stage One, and SEND settings. It can be used in continuous provision, workstation tasks, small group work, or one-to-one sessions. The resource is easy to prepare, visually appealing, and ideal for learners who benefit from structured, hands-on tasks that involve real-world photographs.
