Dear Colleague,

Imagine vast herds of longhorn cattle moving across open plains, cowboys driving them north to booming railroad towns, and ranchers carving out empires in the American West. This is the story of cattle ranching — an industry that shaped frontier life, brought wealth and conflict, and transformed the landscape forever.

This lesson is the twelfth in a unit on the American West. It examines the features of cattle ranching, traces its historical development, and challenges students to demonstrate their knowledge through a narrative exam-style account.

All lessons in this series follow a consistent structure, supporting coherent learning and helping students track their progress:

LO 1: To explain the features of cattle ranching
LO 2: To order the history of cattle ranching
LO 3: To write a narrative account on cattle ranching

Learning Features:

Fully interactive with all tasks assessed
Resources provided at the end of the PowerPoint
A clear and knowledge-rich lesson

I have also created a Lesson 13 on the Johnson County War, as well as full sets on Plains Indians, Settlers and the Development of the Plains, Law and Order, and more. The complete unit is also available (24 lessons, £7.71).
