The process which helps you to identify, evaluate and replace an automatic negative thought is called Cognitive Restructuring (CR), and plays an important role in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It consists of 4 steps:

  1. Identification of the automatic negative thoughts

  2. Identification of the cognitive distortion

  3. Evaluating the negative thoughts accuracy by rational

questioning

  1. Replacing the automatic negative thought with a rational one

This questions guide you through the process of dissecting and replacing your Automatic thought with a rational one. Note that it is not enough to just replace the negative thought with overly positive one. If the replacement thought is not realistic it won’t be helpful.

It may be difficult to think in this new way at first, but gradually and with practice you rational and positive replacement thoughts will come more naturally.
