This extract from from Chapter 1 of Jamaica Inn the gives weaker students a simplified and broken down way of accessing a fiction text. The genre of the text is Gothic and it provides opportunities to revise features of this particular theme. It can easily be adjusted to suit an academic, able group. The first part poses comprehension and language activities to ensure the text is carefully read. The second part gives questions which follow the style of Language Paper 1 for AQA - analysing language, writing about structure and evaluating a section of the extract. It can easily be modifed to be used with the Edexcel specification. This lesson is also easily adaptable for a bright KS3 class looking the Gothic genre.
