A PowerPoint lesson to introduce the concept of chemical bonding (ionic, covalent and metallic) to students who are beginning their GCSEs. This is the first in a series of lessons that look to cover the key ideas identified in the AQA chemistry syllabus, but could be used for any GCSE readiness or introductory lesson. The ideas covered here are " Atoms bond by either transferring electrons from one atom to another or by sharing electrons"
The thinking behind this lesson is to introduce the key ideas as a way to bridge the gap between ks3 level content and GCSE. As such the lesson does not go into great detail about electronic structure, ion formation etc, but instead covers the key idea details above in broad strokes.
Any feedback on how this resource has been used in lessons would be appreciated in the comments section.
Animations within the PowerPoint show the transfer or sharing of electrons, this is designed to be used with teacher instruction to explain what is happening. After detailing the structure of the atom, these are deliberately simply depictions of the atoms which should be made explicit to learners too.
