Tell me more!
The goal of this lesson is to strengthen students’ rhythm reading, coordination, and ensemble skills through learning a Christmas-themed samba-style piece. Students perform rhythms through call & response, ostinatos, and imitation, both as a full class and in smaller groups. It’s a lively rhythm-reading and performing activity that encourages engagement and participation from all students.

This lesson includes the following rhythms: crotchet notes and rests, quaver notes and rests, semiquavers and dotted rhythms - making it ideal for middle school students who are ready for more rhythmic challenge than other Christmas lessons available on TES. The winter theme keeps it fun and memorable without feeling too childish, and the fun Christmas phrases help students remember each rhythm pattern easily.

This activity can be taught in 20–30 minutes or extended into a full lesson with group swaps, performances, and the included worksheet. You can go into as much or as little detail as you like with rhythmic literacy and you can even use it as a performance piece for a Christmas Concert! It’s completely no-prep, requires only your screen, and can be performed with any percussion instruments: samba drums, untuned percussion, bucket drums, or even body percussion. It works equally well with large classes or small groups.

There are one-off lessons to fill those final lessons, rhythm games, a scavenger hunt and more! Noisy lessons, quiet lessons, printables, written, practical, group work, individual work - it's all here. All these holiday music resources require minimal or no prep at all and plenty are also suitable for music subs or non-specialist cover teachers. Even if you don’t use every resource, the heavily discounted bundle price means you’ll still save money compared to buying each activity individually... and you’ll have a stash of winter music ideas ready for years to come! **What's included?** *Winter Escape Room* - new this year but escape rooms are a favourite year after year! Requiring only basic music theory skills, and some classroom instruments like glockenspiels, students work to solve the puzzles, all tied together with a "band camp blizzard" story line. Prep: print & read over *Note Cards* - print these cute Christmas tree cards with treble staff notes and use them in a variety of different ways! Clear instructions are given for 8 different games, covering theory, composition, partner work, small groups, starter tasks, fast finishers, bell ringers and more. Use a quick game to give your lesson a winter flavor, or use several of the games to make a full lesson. Prep: print, cut & laminate *Class Samba* - a fresh alternative to bucket drumming, this samba-style lesson uses Christmas phrases to teach rhythms and get your students performing in a class ensemble. Think "snow worries" and "sleigh what?!" - you'll get a smile out of even your iciest students! Prep: none, optional printables *Jigsaw Hunt* - a fun activity that gets your students moving around the classroom looking for elves! Students get sheet music with bars missing and the elves provide them with the missing notes. The finished sheet music (We Wish You a Merry Christmas) can be played on classroom instruments. Prep: print *Christmas anagrams* - a no-prep quiz where students unscramble 24 holiday movie and song titles. Use alone or add it as a round to an existing quiz! Ideal for subs or last day lessons. Prep: print *Winter playlist* - a simple one-off lesson where students create a playlist and design a corresponding album cover. There are 6 suggested titles with briefs to direct them, or they can create their own. Ideal for cover work and quiet lessons. Prep: print *Reading passages & questions* - ok, this resource is not going to win any points for excitement but there's no point denying that we sometimes need some quiet, busy work - either to leave for cover teachers or just because our class' energy levels are unmanageable! When the Christmas buzz gets overwhelming for you or a sub, get some quiet with 8 reading passages, each with 10 corresponding questions, on classic Christmas tunes. Prep: print
