This PPT contains a Draft lesson, as well as the Assessment Lesson with an Argumentative essay based on the Block Method for a Newspapers module than can run with either year 8 or year 9.
We are currently testing this assessment on year 8 at our school and I have to say that at least my classes have been successful in completing the argumentative essay.
Attached are also two articles reporting on the same story (a tabloid and a broadsheet). Pupils need to be able to spot similarities, but also differences and write a 5 paragraphs essay with at least 3 analytical paragraphs.
You can run the assessment over at least 2-3 lessons, although I am not surprised if you will have pupils finishing it in their first lesson.
