Compass of Sustainability – Classroom & Outdoor Learning Activity (All Ages)

The Compass of Sustainability is an interactive sustainability education activity, perfect for classroom learning, outdoor learning, and forest school. It can be adapted for any age group – from primary children to adults – with age-appropriate language and discussion.

Whether indoors or outdoors, this activity helps students of all levels understand how changes in one area can affect others, encouraging thoughtful discussion and practical action for sustainability.

In this one-hour session, students use the Compass of Sustainability tool to explore a chosen topic through four key lenses:

  • Nature
  • Economy
  • Society
  • Wellbeing

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Learners record their ideas, share observations, and link them to the four compass points. This structured activity develops:

  • Critical thinking
  • Systems thinking and holistic learning
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Awareness of the interconnectedness of sustainability
