Sentence Structure Strip: Complex Sentences and Subordinating Conjunctions
Help children build confidence with complex sentences using this practical, visual sentence structure strip. Designed as a writing scaffold, it supports pupils to combine a main clause and a subordinate clause, choose a suitable subordinating conjunction, and punctuate their sentence accurately.
Print the resource on A3, fold it in half and laminate it to create a durable, double-sided sentence strip. Children can use it during English lessons, independent writing, sentence-building activities or as part of a classroom writing station.
The strip includes a bank of subordinating conjunctions, including although, because, before, if, since, unless, when and while, alongside clear prompts for the main clause and subordinate clause. It gives pupils a simple reminder of how complex sentences are structured and where punctuation may be needed.
