Planning doesn’t fall apart in the lesson — it falls apart at the start.
One of the biggest challenges with Curriculum for Wales is knowing where to begin.
Before planning activities, before structuring lessons, there needs to be clarity around what is actually being developed.
This Concept Overview Tool is designed to support that first step.
What this resource helps you do:
- Identify key concepts within each Statement of What Matters
- Develop a clearer understanding of what sits beneath the curriculum
- Make meaningful links across AoLEs
- Build a strong foundation for concept-led planning
How it works:
Each page focuses on a different AoLE.
Simply copy and paste a Statement of What Matters, highlight the concepts within it, and use the grid to organise your thinking.
Prompt questions are included to support deeper thinking:
What is actually being developed here?
What sits beneath this statement?
How might this concept be revisited and deepened over time?
Why this matters:
Concepts are not something we invent — they already exist within the Statements of What Matters. This tool helps you make them visible.
Once the concepts are clear, planning becomes more purposeful, manageable and connected.
Next steps:
This document is designed to be the starting point.
Once concepts are identified, they can then be mapped, developed and built upon using your planning tools to ensure clear progression across the school.
A note from Pearidot:
If you find this resource helpful, a quick review on TES would mean so much and helps other schools find tools that make Curriculum for Wales feel more manageable.
