Use nearby words to infer a meaning, then test it in the original sentence. The worked example and sentence starters introduce a repeatable routine: read, find clues, suggest a meaning, substitute it and check.

Five fictional school passages give pupils practice with clues that define, contrast with or show a word in use. The tasks ask pupils to explain meanings, quote a relevant clue and rewrite a sentence while preserving its meaning. Pupils also consider when context is too weak to establish an exact meaning.

Teacher guidance gives a suggested lesson routine and support options. Answer keys explain the reasoning and allow equivalent wording. A short independent check uses two new notes and has a separate teacher key.

Included files: a 19-page A4 customer PDF with 5 lessons, student activities and teacher guidance/answers, plus a separate 12-page student-only A4 PDF. The student-only packet repeats the pupil pages from the full resource; these are not extra unique pages.

Suggested ages 9-11. Pupils should be able to read short paragraphs and explain a word meaning. Read-aloud, oral rehearsal and sentence starters may support access. Choose according to reading and subject readiness. This age guidance is an intended-use judgement, not a UK year conversion or tested placement.

Print only the pages you need. The pupil pages use white backgrounds, dark text and restrained rules or models. Black-and-white printing is suitable.

The preview shows four genuine student-facing pages from this British English edition, including any worked model answers printed for pupils. Teacher answer-key pages are excluded.
