A contemporary poetry lesson exploring self-reflection and memory through a moment of recognition.

More than analysis, this lesson develops students’ awareness as readers — training attention, sharpening noticing, and making thinking visible through reading and writing.

The poem shows a student watching a fight in the school cafeteria. After the noise settles, he sees one of the participants up close — her expression stops him. In that moment, a memory surfaces, and he recognises himself in her. The shift happens through a single look, linking the present moment to the past.

At the centre of the lesson is a simple shift:
What happens when a moment in the present brings the past back into view?

Designed as a focused, minimal sequence, the lesson prioritises depth over coverage — helping students track moments of change, build writing through clear shifts in time, and sustain attention within a structured task.
