Binary, Denary & Hexadecimal – Interactive Teaching Tool

Demonstrate number representation with this free, interactive tool for GCSE Computer Science. Designed for teachers to use on an interactive whiteboard or projector.

Six teaching views:

  • Binary place value: toggle eight bits and watch a large denary total and the working update instantly.
  • Denary to binary: step through each place value, showing why we write a 1 or a 0, with subtraction and a remaining total.
  • Binary to hexadecimal: enter an 8-bit binary number and convert each group of four bits into a hexadecimal digit.
  • Denary to hexadecimal: demonstrate division by 16, using the quotient and remainder to form the answer.
  • Binary addition: enter two 8-bit binary numbers and work through each column, including carries and overflow.
  • Binary shifts: demonstrate logical left and right shifts, showing zeros entering and bits being discarded.

Full-screen Board mode automatically scales the demonstration to fit your display. Step controls, clear explanations and answer-reveal options let you pause for questions and predictions.

Uses 8-bit unsigned values, making it suitable for introducing concepts, whole-class explanations and GCSE revision.

Easy to use: download the HTML file and open it in a modern browser. No installation, internet connection or account is required for the teaching tool.
