This six-page worksheet helps students deconstruct and analyse Prince Ea’s spoken word/performance poetry piece ‘Dear Future Generations: Sorry’. In combination with the video and a written copy of the poem (see links below), the worksheet asks students to consider how the poem is constructed, from simpler, comprehension-style questions all the way through to challenging questions on the effect and purpose of individual language techniques.

There is a full roll call of techniques addressed, including metaphor, emotive language, repetition (anaphora), anecdote, caesura, diction, pun, rhyme and more. Some questions are fairly straightforward, while others will really push your students and encourage careful consideration of how the poet uses language. In any case, the worksheet can be adapted for your class by adding or removing questions, as it is included in both Word and pdf formats.

This worksheet should be used in combination with the YouTube video of Prince Ea’s poem, as well as a copy of the poem.
