These are short reading books (title page plus 4 pages, 1 or 2 sentences on each) with mainly decodable words and just a few common irregular words. I won’t pretend that they’re great literary works. In fact, I’ll admit that they’re a bit boring! But I think that they could prove useful. I’ve made them after being frustrated by trying to do group reading with my poorer year 1s when I didn’t have any suitable books in my classroom. I want my children to practise their decoding skills instead of guessing. Hopefully short texts like these will improve children’s reading, boost their confidence, and get them onto proper books more quickly. The pages have been made with very large margins. To make them into books, first trim around the black border and mount onto coloured paper. Then trim again, leaving a small margin of coloured paper all the way around the page. Fold the top third of the page over so that the pictures are covered. Then stick the bottom two thirds onto a piece of different coloured paper (the top third isn’t stuck because it’s a flap). Then asssemble the pages by stapling them or by putting them into a clip file. Because the pictures are covered by the flap, the children can’t use them to guess at words. Instead they have to actually read the words, and only see the pictures by opening the flap once they have read the whole sentence.
