This lesson package explicitly teaches Higher Level English students how to understand what an exam question is really asking before they start writing. This is the single most common reason capable students underperform in the Leaving Certificate exam.
It can be used in two ways:
- Lesson 1 of a structured exam‑preparation scheme of work
- A standalone intervention lesson for classes who regularly misread, partially answer, or drift from exam questions
What problem does this lesson solve?
Many students lose marks not because they lack ideas or knowledge, but because they:
- Misread instruction words (e.g. discuss, analyse, to what extent)
- Confuse the focus of a question with its scope
- Ignore qualifiers like three points, four features, at least two texts
- Write broadly about a topic instead of answering this specific question
This lesson directly addresses those issues by installing a simple, repeatable framework students can apply to any LC English question in under a minute.
The core framework
Students learn to break every exam question into three non‑negotiable parts:
- Instruction word – what they are being asked to do
- Focus – the intellectual territory they must engage with
- Scope – the rules and limits they must work within
They then condense the question into a one‑sentence summary.
What’s included
- a fully editable PowerPoint lesson with timing, scripted prompts, modelling, guided practice and cold‑call checks covering Paper 1 and Paper 2 question types (Comprehension, Single Text, Comparative, Poetry)
- a student handout
- an answer key for the student tasks
- a teacher lesson guide which fully explains the lesson logic, its sequence, anticipated misconceptions and how to address them allowing this lesson to be taught in under 30 minutes prep time
Students leave the lesson able to:
- Identify the real task of a question
- Stay within the marks, limits and constraints set
- Stop writing what they hope is relevant and start writing what is required
The lesson is ideal for:
- Leaving Cert Higher Level English
- Exam preparation and revision blocks
- Classes that “know the content” but still lose marks
