Intro:

This unit gives students the opportunity to inquire into a current social, political or economic issue. Desertification is one such issue – an economic and environmental phenomenon that transforms arable land into desert, dislocating populations and eroding the environment’s capacity to support life. As a metaphor, it emphasizes the advance, intensification, worsening or spread of a problem and thereby, the potential consequences, in the form of the decline of social capital, economic austerity, cultural regression etc… It is the guiding theme of the unit foregrounding issues such as climate change, globalism, racism, and underdevelopment.
