This lesson will help children to understand the events at Dunkirk during the Second World War. They will learn who was involved, why the troops needed to be evacuated, the role of the ‘Little Ships’ and more.

This resource includes:

  • PowerPoint detailing what happened at Dunkirk during Operation Dynamo. Also includes a ‘hook’ in the form of the ‘Dunkirk’ film trailer, as well as Churchill’s famous speech recording.
  • Lots of opportunities for partner talk, group work and critical thinking. Several timed activities to boost engagement.
  • Three tasks to complete. These can be given to all children, or can be used as differentiation depending on ability. Tasks include:

Task 1 – present the events at Dunkirk in a style of their choice.

Task 2 – Worksheet - Do you think Dunkirk was a success for Britain?

Task 3 – Churchill’s speech - write your own.

  • Exit ticket to assess learning at the end of the lesson.
